Kit 42. Number Cruncher 68HC705K1

Binary/hexadecimal/decimal/2's complement converter using a K1 uC. Eight LEDs are in a row. Step turns them on in turn by counting up using binary arithmetic. The 3-digit display shows the decimal equivalent (between 0 & 255) of the binary pattern. Press mode and the equivalent hexadecimal value (between 0 & FF) of the binary pattern is displayed. Mode and step pressed together will count backwards. If step is kept depressed the LEDs will rapidly count through the complete binary cycle in about 9 seconds.

But that is only half the capability of the Kit. Pressing mode again will show the 2's complement binary pattern of the previously displayed binary number. The equivalent hex and decimal values of the 2's comp number are also shown on the 3-digit display. Double-sided small PCB, 49mm x 79mm, 1.95" x 3.1". Supplied with box. 9V battery required. Display turns off after 1 minute with no keypress. Complete annotated program code supplied on floppy disk. Reviewed in Electronics Australia, 9/94, p82 - 86.

Kit 54. Universal Timer 68HC705K1

This Kit continues the pattern demonstrated in earlier K1 micro-controller (uC) Kits (#38, #40, #42) where a uC more than replaces a cluster of logic IC's. In this Kit we have incorporated seven different types of timing operations all in one Kit. The Kit basically only contains 3 IC's. This is less than some timers which only time a single operation! A 4.096 MHz crystal attached to the K1 gives accurate timing. We have included two opto-isolators in the design to allow for a full range of signal inputs ranging from simple push buttons to electrically isolated voltage switching sources.

Time can be counted in steps of 0.1 seconds between 0.1 & 6553.6 sec. (1h 49m 13.6s), or in 1 seconds steps between 1 sec. & 65536 sec. (18h 12m 16s.) On-board DIP switches select start/stop times & timing modes.

Three flowcharts and 4 pages of written explanations are given in the documentation. Double sided PCB 56mm x 97mm mounted on box. On-board 12V relay rated at 5A/240V.

K92 Kit 92 IR Remote Control & Decoder IC

This Kit uses a commercial 14 button remote control, unit to put an active low signal onto one of 14 output pins on a decoder IC. That is, when a button is pressed the pin corresponding to that button goes low. Normally, each of the 14 output pins is high. It is up to the user to use this information in their own circuit where remote control is required. For example, to control up to 14 relays or to control the movement of a robot. We supply all the necessary extra components required for the decoder IC to function properly. No PCB is supplied. It is up to the user to breadboard their application then make their own PCB. A sample application/test circuit is provided. A 330W resistor & LED are supplied for testing the active low on a pin in response to a button press.

We supply three sets of components:

1. a 14 button Infra Red Remote Control unit. It just needs you to add 2 x AAA batteries.

2. a 3-pin Infrared Receiver Module, the Waitrony PIC1018SCL, which converts the modulated 38kHz signal into data pulses.

3. an Atmel 89C2051-24PC microcontroller which we have preprogrammed to decode the IR data pulses from the remote control into one of 14 active low outputs. All required components for the microcontroller are supplied - a 12MHz ceramic resonator for the oscillator, resistor, capacitor and diode for the power-on reset circuit plus two 10K pullup resistors.

DIY KIT 117 PICALL Microcontroller PIC Programmer

A continuity tester is one of the most useful pieces of test equipment to have. It is used for testing the electrical continuity between two points. Our tester will "buzz" up to a specified resistance or less. Two on-board resistance ranges available. Full theory of operation given. The user may adjust the resistance ranges to suit his own requirements.

The kit is driven from the Parallel Printer port of a PC using a straight thru M/F 25 pin cable. These are readily available.

There is no software Registration, as a programmed chip is supplied in the kit, and the PC driver software is free.

For volume programming and maximum flexibility the kit requires one on-board wide-slot 40-pin ZIF socket. The software tells you where to place the PIC you are programming. (Note some older designed PIC programmers available like the Warp-13 have 2 or even 3 (!) ZIF sockets on-board. Only one wide-slot 40 pin ZIF socket is necessary with PICALL.) The reason the 40 pin ZIF socket is not included is because these are manufactured in north America while the kit is packed in Hong Kong. Since most kits are sold in Europe & north America it is cheaper if you buy the socket locally.

All software and other documentation is available from Bojan Dobaj's Home Page at picallw.com

For a full list of the devices programmed by Kit 117 visit picallw.com

K136 Kit 136 Heart of Love

A rearrangement of the Star LEDsKit 46 into two hearts. All that has changed is the software lookup table. Electrically the hardware stays exactly the same. This demonstrates the power of using a micro-controller over normal IC's. These two new kits (kits 46 and 136) flash 30 super-bright, red LEDs in a variety of different patterns. The patterns are read from a lookup table in a micro-controller. Electrically both circuits are the same; it is only the lookup table and the physical layout of the LEDs which is different. These circuits would be impossible using normal ICs. Both circuits are used with permission from the designer, Les grant. All source code is provided.

We have found in recent batches of 2051's (used in the Star, Kit 46 and Heart, Kit 136) that the reset pullup resistor in the chip is up the higher end of the specification than the early ones. You should be able to reduce the reset cap down to 2u2 or 1u without problems. In more "serious" designs you would add a 100k pullup resistor which would swamp variation in the chip pullup.

K145 Kit 145 Serial Temperature Sensor.

Kit 145 is a PC controlled 4 channel temperature meter (either deg C or F) using the serial port,a PIC12C509 and 4 x DS1820. No external power required. We think that each DS1820 may be located over 200 meters away from the motherboard and PC. This is an ideal use for old 386 and 486 computers: continuous temperature data logging. Users will have to massage the input data stream to their purpose. It may be dumped into an Excel spreadsheet, or they can write BASIC programs using the INPUT command to grab the readings. As you can see from the photo there is not much to the hardware. (Developed by James Cameron and you can read his documentation here.)

The kit is supplied with one DS1820 due to their cost. You may buy additional ones to complete the kit directly from us at $US6.50 each includes airmail postage.

Note that the DS1820 has now been replaced by theDS18S20 (1/2000).

K163 Kit 163 12V DC Xenon Flasher.

Uses a sidac instead of a neon tube to trigger the flash. Sidacs represent a unique set of thyristor qualities. The sidac is a bi-directional voltage triggered switch. Some characteristics of this device include a normal 95 to 330 volt switching point, negative resistance range, latching characteristics at turn-on and a low on-state voltage drop. One cycle surge current capability up to 20 amps makes the sidac an ideal product for dumping charged capacitors through an inductor in order to generate high-voltage pulses. Applications include light controls, high-pressure sodium lamp starters, power oscillators and high-voltage power supplies

This kit allows controlling the speed of a DC motor in both the forward and reverse direction. The range of control is from fully OFF to fully ON in both directions. Normally, switches are used to change the direction of rotation of a DC motor. Change the polarity of the applied voltage and the motor spins the other way! However this has the disadvantage that a DPDT switch has to be added to change the polarity of the applied voltage. Now you have two things to control the motor – a direction switch as well as the speed control.

Also, it is not a good idea to suddenly reverse the voltage on a DC motor while it is spinning. It can cause a current surge that can burn out the speed controller. Not to mention any mechanical stress it can cause as well. This kit overcomes both these problems.

Kit 168 the Ultrasonic Wind Speed Meter

All the components fit under the 16 x 2 LCD. Switches S2 and S3 come out from the bottom of the board which has plastic 10mm standoffs. It uses a 40kHz ultrasonic Tx/Rx pair to detect wind speed. This design was published in EPE, 1/2003. A copy of the original EPE article goes with the kit. To hold the ultrasonics I found that the locally available, disposable chopsticks were excellent. They even had a groove to align the units to directly face each other.

Here are the redrawn schematics - jpg. I have kept the same component designators as the original article.

K171 250mW POWER AMPLIFIER

This project is a simple 2-transistor VHF power amplifier,
with about 16dB gain, and requires no tuning or
alignment procedures. Wideband techniques have been
used in the design and the circuit is equipped with a "lowpass"
filter to ensure good output spectral purity. The
project has been designed for assembly on a single-sided
printed circuit board. The circuit is specifically designed
to amplify the output of 7mW to 10mW WBFM
transmitters (wide band) to a final level of 250mW to
300mW, after the filter.

K181 Kit 181 Rolling Code 10-Channel UHF Remote Control

Kit 181 uses the same Tx/RX pair as Kit 180 but it uses all 10 defined keypress combinations out of the 4 buttons to activate relays. The following keypress combinations give readable outputs: pins 1, 2, 3, and 4 (of course) and the pins 1&2, 1&3, 1&4, 2&3, 2&4, and 3&4 pressed together. A PIC16F628 does ALL the work. It is a perfect demonstartion of how micro-controllers have taken over from cmos logic etc.

Toggle or momentary mode will be determined by keeping the 1 or two buttons depressed for more than 2 seconds and then that relay will stay in that mode until another >2 sec keypress. Small relays are used to save weight and board area.

K186 Kit 186 Power Amplifier D.C. Supply

This is a DC power supply board designed for our Kit 106 audio power amplifier. It is also suitable for any power amplifier module or circuit requiring a positive and negative rail voltage of up to 45 Volts per side. The output voltage and current will depend on the transformer chosen, and this is not supplied with the kit. Never use a transformer larger than 35V-0-35V, as the capacitors voltage rating will be exceeded.

Kit 187 Stepper Motor Drive

The Stepper Motor Chopper Driver is a Bipolar Stepper Motor Drive with easily adjustable current control up to 2A, based on the SGS-Thompson L297 and L298 stepper motor controller and driver IC’s.

Stepper motors are rated by current and and not by voltage.  A chopper driver because it is  switching on and off current allows a set current to be fed to the coils and not be dependent on the voltage of the power supply.  The Chopper Driver also allows for the use of higher voltage power supplies (up to 36V) to overcome the effects of the inductance of the coils giving better performance and a higher top speed.
